NORTHFIELD, NJ – July 15, 2015 – For the second consecutive year, the law firm of Petro Cohen, P.C. has partnered with Kids’ Chance of New Jersey to award a $10,000 scholarship to a young adult with financial hardship from a parent’s workplace accident. The 2015-2016 recipient of the scholarship is Scott Kwiatek of South Amboy, NJ.
As a “Doctorate Degree” Sponsor of the Kids’ Chance of NJ Leadership of Excellence Program, Petro Cohen partnered with the organization in developing the Petro Cohen, P.C. and Kids’ Chance of NJ Scholarship. For the duration of the four-year program, the Kids’ Chance organization committed to match funds donated by Petro Cohen to create the $10,000 annual award for a student attending a four-year college.
The 2015-2016 scholarship recipient, Scott Kwiatek, who lost his father to a workers’ compensation accident shortly after he was born, was the scholarship recipient last year as well. In the fall of 2014, Mr. Kwiatek began his collegiate studies at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree in Civil Engineering.
Mr. Kwiatek enjoyed his first year of college at NJIT, participating in various study groups, intramural sports, and other activities while maintaining a strong GPA. Scott commented, “One great part about being an NJIT student is the amount of resources they supply for extra help outside of the classroom.”
Kwiatek has the opportunity to continue the sponsorship for all four years of undergraduate school, providing he stays in good standing and continues with school as a full time student. The hard working student is keeping busy this summer by working two jobs and participating on a travel men’s baseball team.
Petro Cohen, P.C. has been a strong supporter of Kids’ Chance of NJ since its inception in 2012. Senior Partner Frank Petro, Esq. said, “Our hope is that this scholarship opportunity will provide some financial relief enabling deserving young people to pursue their educational dreams.”
To be eligible for the scholarship grant, applicants must have a parent who has been fatally or catastrophically injured in a work-related accident, meeting the criteria of the New Jersey Workers’ Compensation Act and resulting in financial need. Interested applicants can download the Scholarship Application by visiting Petro Cohen’s Web site. All applications will be reviewed by an independent Kids’ Chance of NJ committee and announced by the organization’s Scholarship Committee.
Petro Cohen attorneys will present Scott Kwiatek with the $10,000 scholarship award at the Annual Kids’ Chance of NJ Gala, taking place Thursday, July 23 at the Heldrich Hotel in New Brunswick. Kids’ Chance of New Jersey is a 501(C) 3 organization and a member of the national organization, Kids’ Chance of America, which was founded in 1988.
