Casino Worker Receives Two Awards of Compensation for Workplace Accidents

Jul 29, 2015 | Petro Cohen | Read Time: 2 minutes

NORTHFIELD, NJ – July 29, 2015 – On July 16, 2015, a client of Petro Cohen was awarded two separate Awards of Compensation totaling an overall permanency rating of 35% of his body for spinal surgery, which was necessary following two separate compensable accidents that occurred during his employment on May 15, 2010 and February 18, 2013.

The 47-year-old of age client was employed by an Atlantic City casino for 25 years as a kitchen utility worker. Following his first accident, he had a positive MRI study for disc pathology and received a 17.5% rating of his body, entitling him to tax-free compensation totaling $23,442. As a result of a subsequent accident of February 18, 2013, he aggravated the original condition and was determined to have a 35% overall rating, which entitled him to additional compensation of $56,673, less allowance for fees and costs.

The Awards of Compensation were determined after an informal conference with Petro Cohen attorneys, the attorney for the casino, and the Judge of Compensation. The Judge determined that the worker was a credible, hard-working individual and was entitled to these compensation benefits, even though he had resumed full-time employment in another capacity.

In addition to this tax-free compensation, the Award also entitles him to receive future benefits if his condition worsens within two years of last date of payment. If that should occur, he may be entitled to further medical treatment for the condition and possible future compensation if the condition worsens to the point where his overall loss of function increases.
